Summarize this page with AI
Almost everyone who visits this stretch of Krabi has to make the same call: sleep on Railay, or sleep in Ao Nang and visit Railay by boat. Both work. They are 10 minutes apart by longtail (Wikivoyage's figure) and suit different trips. If you are also weighing Krabi against Phuket, Thailand Voyager has a Krabi Railay vs Phuket comparison.
In short: choose Railay for beaches, cliffs, quiet evenings and sunsets. Choose Ao Nang for cheaper rooms, more food choice, markets and easy tour departures. Or split your stay.

Two options, one verdict
The same ten minutes of water, two different trips
Railay and Ao Nang are ten minutes apart by longtail on Wikivoyage's figures, and that closeness is exactly why the choice is awkward: one bay, one landing, two very different holidays.
Railay has no road, four areas and a walk up to the viewpoint. Ao Nang has roads, markets, hundreds of rooms and the piers the island tours leave from. Wikivoyage's own price bands make the gap concrete: budget is under 1,500 baht on Railay against under 500 baht in Ao Nang, and Wikivoyage warns that prices typically double in high season, from 1 November to 30 April.

The boat, minute by minute
From the east end of Ao Nang beach to Railay West, which is where most longtails land. The minutes and the fares are Wikivoyage's figures; the last boat of the day is not published anywhere, so confirm it at the pier.
0 min
You are at the east end of Ao Nang beach. There is no timetable and no pier queue: Wikivoyage gives a minimum of 8 people before the shared boat leaves, so you may wait for it to fill.
Before you board
Wikivoyage warns that you are expected to walk out several metres into the surf to get in, depending on the tide. Wear what can get wet and carry nothing you cannot hold above the water.
10 minutes
The crossing. The cliffs come up behind the boat, the longtails of Ao Nang shrink, and you land on the sand at Railay West.
On arrival
Everything on the peninsula is a 5 to 10 minute walk, except Ton Sai, which is a longer hike through the jungle (Wikivoyage). Ask your hotel which landing is closest to your room.
The fare
Wikivoyage's Ao Nang page lists 80 baht per person by day and 100 baht after 18:00, and its Railay page quotes 100 baht. If you land at Railay East instead, that is the boat from Krabi Town, about 30 minutes, and there is a pier.

Same water, two soundtracks
See
Railay: cliffs, sand and longtails on the beach. Ao Nang: a long beach, the piers, the night market and the road.
Hear
Railay: longtail engines and no traffic. Ao Nang: road noise, market stalls and restaurants.
Feel
Railay: wet feet at the landing and a short walk everywhere. Ao Nang: a road to the door, and a shop within a few minutes.
Prices typically double in high season, from 1 November to 30 April.
Railay or Ao Nang at a glance

|---|---|
| The beach | Railay: fine white sand under limestone cliffs, four areas. Ao Nang: a long main beach plus Nopparat Thara and Pai Plong nearby. |
| Room prices | Wikivoyage bands. Railay: budget under 1,500 baht, mid-range 1,500 to 2,500, splurge above 2,500. Ao Nang: budget under 500 baht, mid-range 500 to 1,500, splurge above 1,500. |
| Food and evenings | Railay: restaurants and bars on the Railay East boardwalk and in resorts. Ao Nang: many restaurants, a Landmark night market and a Wednesday evening market. |

| Best for | Railay: scenery, swimming, climbing. Ao Nang: budget, choice, convenience. |

Choose Railay if

The cost of that is money and logistics: rooms are pricier and every arrival and departure involves a boat.
- You want the scenery on your doorstep. The cliffs, Phra Nang and the viewpoint are a walk away, not a boat ride.
- You want quiet evenings. With no roads and no big shopping, evenings are calmer than in Ao Nang. That is an advantage or a limit, depending on you.
- You climb. Wikivoyage counts over seven hundred bolted routes, and Ton Sai is where climbers stay.
- You care about sunsets. GetYourGuide's Railay page points to Railay West for sunset.
Choose Ao Nang if

The trade-off: it is a resort town, so you are less immersed in the scenery. Visit Railay for a day or an evening instead.
- Budget matters. Wikivoyage's budget band for Ao Nang starts under 500 baht a night, against under 1,500 on Railay.
- You want choice. Ao Nang has many restaurants, a night market and shops, and it is where tour operators cluster.
- You want easy logistics. You arrive by road from Krabi Airport (Wikivoyage lists an airport bus at 150 baht per person, about an hour) and step straight into a hotel.
- You will do several boat trips. Many island tours pick up in Ao Nang, so you save the early boat across from Railay.
Or split your stay
A very workable plan: two or three nights on Railay for the beaches and sunsets, then two nights in Ao Nang for markets, restaurants and the island tours, or the other way round. The boat between them takes about 10 minutes on Wikivoyage's figures, so a split costs little time. Wikivoyage lists 80 baht per person by day and 100 baht after 18:00 for the longtail from Ao Nang.
Keep luggage in mind: boats are small, and Railay West has a beach landing while Railay East has a pier. Ask your hotel which landing is closest to your room.
The money, in more detail
Wikivoyage warns that prices typically double in high season (1 November to 30 April) on Railay, and gives the Ao Nang example of a 600 baht low-season room costing 1,600 baht in high season. Trip.com's Railay listing on 20 September 2026 showed nightly prices for 27 to 28 September from about US$28 to US$86 at four named hotels, all low-season examples.
For the best value on either side, book outside 1 November to 30 April. Many places close in low season, according to Wikivoyage's Ao Nang page, so confirm your hotel is open.
Which traveller are you
| Traveller | Our pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Couple on a beach holiday | Railay West | Swimming, sunsets and quiet evenings, at a higher price |
| Backpacker or climber | Ton Sai or Railay East | Cheap rooms and the climbing |
| Family with young children | Ao Nang, with a Railay day trip | Easier logistics and food choice; Railay by boat for the beach |
| First-timer with limited days | Two nights each | The best of both without over-planning |
| Budget traveller | Ao Nang | Lower room prices and cheap food |
Ao Nang town and the night market
Ao Nang town is not a separate place from the beach: its centre runs along the seafront road behind Ao Nang Beach and up the main road inland, so everything is a few minutes' walk from the sand. That strip holds most of the restaurants, bars, massage shops, convenience stores, pharmacies and tour agencies in the area, and it is where you book longtails and island trips. Hotels spread further back towards the hills, and songthaews run along the road to Krabi Town.
Ao Nang also has night markets with street-food stalls, grilled seafood and skewers, fruit shakes, Thai desserts, clothes and souvenirs. Opening days and hours vary by market and by season, so ask your hotel which one is running during your stay. Expect street-food prices, well below a sit-down restaurant, and check the board at each stall. This is the real difference from Railay: after dark Ao Nang offers choice and movement, while Railay stays a small, quiet peninsula with no market.
Season changes the answer
In low season (May to October on Wikivoyage's dates) many places close and prices fall. If you travel then, check that your Railay hotel and its restaurants are open, and note that Ao Nang has more choice year round.
