Summarize this page with AI
Railay is a small peninsula on Thailand's Andaman coast, between Krabi Town and Ao Nang, and you can only reach it by boat: limestone cliffs cut it off from the mainland. That one fact shapes everything about a trip here, from how you arrive with luggage to why the evenings feel quieter than at a normal beach resort.
This guide is built around the decisions people actually get stuck on: how to get across, which of the four beaches to choose, whether to sleep on Railay or in Ao Nang, which boat tours are worth the money, and when the weather turns. Every practical detail is sourced (see the note at the end), and every tour we link is rated 4.5 stars or higher with at least 40 reviews.
If you only have two minutes, read the table below, then go to Railay or Ao Nang and how to get there. For the wider picture of the area, there is also Thailand Voyager's Krabi Railay destination guide.

| How long to stay | One night covers the beaches. Two or three nights suit climbing, Phra Nang and a day on the islands (our suggestion, not a rule). |

What Railay actually is

Railay, also written Rai Leh, sits at the tip of a peninsula surrounded by the sea and blocked from the mainland by Khao Nang mountain, which is why the only way in is by boat. Wikipedia describes it as a small peninsula between the city of Krabi and Ao Nang, and notes that tourism began in the 1970s when backpackers and hippies came here. It was not severely affected by the tsunami of 26 December 2004.
On the ground it is compact. Guests on Trip.com describe walking from one side of the peninsula to the other in roughly 10 to 20 minutes. The four areas feel very different from each other, and choosing between them is the main decision you will make.
The four areas in one minute
- Railay West: fine white sand and shallow water. It is where most longtails from Ao Nang arrive, the north end is best for swimming, and it holds the mid-range to high-end resorts. GetYourGuide's Railay page points to it for sunset.
- Railay East: the mangrove side, where boats to and from Krabi Town land. Not good for swimming or sunbathing, but it has the walkway of restaurants and bars, a Muay Thai school and budget to mid-range rooms.
- Phra Nang: a fine white sand beach at the southern tip, backed by cliffs, with Phra Nang Cave and its shrine close by.
- Ton Sai: a cove just around the corner from Railay West where climbers and backpackers stay in cheap accommodation.
What to do on Railay

Most people combine four things: a swim, a cave or viewpoint walk, a climb or a boat trip, and a sunset. None of it needs a car, which is the point.
- Swim and sunbathe: Railay West (best at the north end) and Phra Nang. Railay East is not good for either. See Best beaches.
- Phra Nang Cave and Diamond Cave: Wikivoyage says Phra Nang Cave can be seen in about fifteen minutes and lists a nominal entrance fee. It holds a shrine where fishermen leave carved offerings. Wikipedia adds that Diamond Cave, with a walkway into it, is on the trail between Railay East and Phra Nang beach.
- Viewpoint and lagoon: Wikivoyage gives about 20 to 25 minutes to climb to the top and another 10 minutes to the viewpoint, and a separate path of another 20 to 25 minutes down towards the lagoon. Wear proper shoes.
- Rock climbing: Wikivoyage counts over seven hundred bolted routes and calls it perhaps the best winter sport climbing area in the world. Half-day beginner classes are listed on GetYourGuide from about US$47 (see below).
- Kayaking: Ao Thalane, a mangrove paddle about 30 to 40 minutes' drive from Ao Nang, runs roughly 5 to 7 km in around two hours on the listed half-day tour.
- Island trips: The 4 Islands, Hong Islands and Phi Phi all start from Ao Nang or Railay. Our ranked shortlist is in Best Krabi island tours.

Where to base yourself
Sleep on Railay if beaches, quiet evenings and sunsets matter more to you than price and choice. Sleep in Ao Nang if you want cheaper rooms, more restaurants, the night market and easy access to the tour piers, and visit Railay by boat for the day.
On price, Wikivoyage's bands for Ao Nang are lower: under 500 baht is budget, 500 to 1,500 mid-range and above 1,500 a splurge, with an example of a 600 baht room in low season costing 1,600 baht in high season. Trip.com listed 12 hotels on Railay when we checked on 20 September 2026, with nightly prices for 27 to 28 September starting from about US$28 at Avatar Railay, US$45 at Bhu Nga Thani, US$60 at Sand Sea Resort and US$86 at Railay Bay Resort. Those are low-season examples for one night, not a rate card.
The full comparison is in Railay or Ao Nang and Where to stay.
How long to stay
- A day trip from Ao Nang: enough for Railay West, Phra Nang and the viewpoint, but you miss the quiet early mornings and evenings.
- One night: lets you see the beaches at both ends of the day and watch the sunset from Railay West.
- Two to three nights: the sweet spot if you want to climb, add a boat trip to the islands and still have a slow day.
- Four nights or more: mainly for climbers, or as one half of a split stay with Ao Nang.
Practical notes
- Boats run on the sea's terms. The standard longtail from Ao Nang leaves from the east end of the beach. Wikivoyage lists 80 baht per person by day and 100 baht after 18:00, and a minimum of 8 people for the shared boat, so expect to wait for a full boat or pay for a charter. See Getting there.
- High-season prices roughly double. Book earlier from November to April.
- Skip the tattoo. Wikivoyage strongly discourages getting a tattoo in Railay, citing overcharging and questionable sterility.
- Wild monkeys are around. Trip.com guests report monkeys going through bins near their hotel, so keep food out of sight.
- Low season means closures. Wikivoyage's Ao Nang page says many places close from May to October.
Ask which pier is closest to your room
Railay West is where most boats from Ao Nang land, while boats from Krabi Town use Railay East, which has a pier. One Trip.com guest at Bhu Nga Thani describes stepping off at the Railay East pier and being about 30 seconds from the resort. Ask your hotel which landing is closest before you book, especially with luggage.
